project: The reinstatement
of the ancient Weyhill Fairground to restore and preserve the historical
features and provide modern community use of this important site.
Despite a history dating back to the 13th century and the distinction
of providing Thomas Hardy with literary muse, Weyhill Fairground
had fallen into decay and disuse. In conjunction with archaeologists,
environmentalists and conservation officers the aim was to clear
away the result of years of neglect to reveal the original Fairground
stalls and booths and allow responsible mixed-use development of
the area.
Such a historically sensitive site not only posed the challenge
of using traditional and almost forgotten crafts such as chalk and
cob walling but also involved careful demolition of modern redundant
buildings, the removal of asbestos and the making safe of agricultural
slurry pits and lagoons. Despite years of neglect the Fairground
was saved as a monument to past times for future generations to
enjoy.
